The history of mercury mining in the region of Santa Bárbara and Huancavelica Peru carries a colonial legacy with contemporary repercussions. In the summer of 2019, Dr. Douglas Smit (University of Pennsylvania) and I collaborated with the Ministry of Culture of Huancavelica and the community of Santa Bárbara on an oral history and photo archive project.  We conducted interviews using the "photovoice" method, which intends to take the camera out of the hands of the ethnographer and into the hands of those narrating their own stories. The results of the project were exhibited in July 2019.
